What are some of the goals of Anger management?

A constant battle with family members, maintaining a residence with parents, unable to live independently for more than a brief period, long period of non-communication with parents, and description of self as the “black the sheep.”

OCD means Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. How to help Attention Deficit Disorder in Adults?

One way is to utilize cognitive strategies to curb impulsive behavior. This can be achieved by teaching self-control strategies of “stop, listen, think, and act” and “problem-solving self-talk.” In treatment, we will role-play these techniques to improve one’s skill level.

Symptoms of depression & how do you address it?

Loss of appetite, lack of energy, sleeplessness, social withdrawal, low self-esteem, unresolved grief issues? A short-term objective would be to address the current and past experiences with depression and attempts to resolve it. Sometimes the clients would be asked to make a list of what he/she is depressed about and process the list content. We want to identify and replace cognitive self-talk that is engaged in to support depression during the process.

How would I approach anxiety with a new patient?

In the initial session, I would ask you to disclose with me what anxiety looks like for you.  What are some of the situations which will trigger it, what are your thoughts and feelings when you experience when triggered, etc? Some patients are triggered by social situations, some by health worries, some by fear of failure, some get triggered by everything and anything, and the list goes on. Working with the individual to understand their experience of anxiety helps me choose the focus and what exercises we will work on.

Chemical Dependence: What is it, and more...?

Dependence is the consistent use of alcohol or other mood-altering drugs until high, intoxicated, or passed out occur. It is when one consumes the mood-altering substance in higher amounts and for more extended periods than intended. This behavior is determined by completing a psychological test designed to determine the nature and severity of social anxiety avoidance. Most clinicians administer such measures as Alcohol Severity Index, the Michigan Alcohol Screening, and process the client’s results. I use a combination of mental health, psychological tests to capture the totality of one’s use of substance behavior.

I have a Low Self-Esteem; how can I improve?

Become aware of the historical and current sources of your low self-esteem. Become aware of your fear of rejection and its connection with past rejection or abandonment experiences. In treatment, we would confront and reframe your negative assessment of yourself and emphasize previous hurt incidents, which may have impacted your feelings about yourself.
